Tiny Office? Here's How to Maximise Your Space

by Cheryl Dunn

Having a tiny office can make it difficult to store and organise essentials and to get work done. If upgrading to a larger office isn't an option, however, you should know that you can still create an excellent work space. Follow these tips for making the most of your space, and you could be surprised by how much more spacious your small office can feel.

Shop for Furniture That is Geared Toward University Students

A lot of the furniture that is sold for commercial work spaces is quite large. This can be a big disadvantage for your smaller office area and can make it feel crowded. One excellent way to find furniture that will fit more perfectly in your office is to shop for furniture that is geared toward students who are attending university. Since these students generally have smaller dormitories and apartments, their office furniture -- like desks and chairs -- are often designed to take up less space. Plus, you can often score good prices on this furniture if you shop around the time that university students go back to school each year.

Use Furniture for Multiple Purposes

Some furniture is meant to be used for multiple purposes. Here are a few ways that you can use each piece of furniture for two or more uses at one time:

  • If you're looking to add decor and additional seating to your office, consider investing in a storage ottoman. Then, you can stash necessities in the ottoman, where they will be out of the way and out of sight.
  • Use your bookshelves and filing cabinets as an extension to your work space. Look for units of a similar height to your desk, and place them alongside it. This allows you to have a larger work area while still having sufficient room for stashing documents and more.
  • Consider buying furniture that has casters. Then, you can quickly wheel pieces of furniture when you need them, and you can slide them out of the way when they are taking up too much space.

Take Advantage of Wall Space

One of the best ways to maximise the space in your office is to take advantage of the space on your walls. Install shelving units above your desk and along your walls, and use them to store books, documents, office supplies and more.

Making the most of a small office isn't easy, but you don't have to expand the size of your office to expand the amount of work space that you have. Instead, follow these three tips to increase the storage and work space in your tiny office.
