How to Keep Your Sliding Glass Door in Excellent Condition

by Cheryl Dunn

A sliding glass door can work well for providing a view of the great outdoors, but your door does require a little bit of maintenance. If you follow these simple tips, however, you can keep your sliding glass door looking great and working perfectly.

Clean the Track Regularly

If the track of your sliding glass door becomes clogged with dirt and grime, it can be difficult for the door to open and close properly. Plus, the dirt and grime can be quite unappealing to look at when you or your guests open the door. Every time that you clean your floors, make a point to clean the track on your sliding glass door as well. You can clean it with an all-purpose cleaner, or you can use a mixture of half vinegar and half water. Either way, you can use a dampened cloth to get the majority of it, and you can use a cotton swab to get into the smaller crevices.

Check and Tighten the Screws

As you use your sliding glass door regularly, your screws can become loose. You should be able to find these screws along the track of the door, and you can quickly and easily screw them in with a handheld screwdriver. This will help prevent loose, raised screws from getting in the way of your sliding glass door and preventing it from opening and closing properly.

Apply Rain Repellent to the Exterior Side

The outside of your sliding glass door can become streaked with water when it rains, which can give it a rather unsightly appearance. To cut down on clean-up time and keep your glass door looking its best at all times, consider applying a rain repellent. This product can be purchased at an auto parts store and is generally used to protect the windshields of cars from rain, but it can work well for repelling rain from your sliding glass door as well. This can help prevent unsightly streaks and will allow you to enjoy clear visibility in even the worst of weather conditions. Plus it can minimise the need for lengthy cleaning sessions.

If you follow these simple tips, you can keep your sliding glass doors looking fabulous all year long. Plus, you won't have to worry as much about them getting jammed or about dealing with other issues. Just make a habit of these three things.
